Mix resistance and cardiovascular exercise, don’t concentrate on one aspect, aim for total fitness to include all the following: 

Endurance, Strength, Flexibility, Power, 
Balance, Speed, Co-ordination.

Vary your training so that your body doesn’t get stuck into the same routine, which it will adapt to quickly and your progression will slow and even stop.
